FAQs

Cavity Wall Insulation

How is the material installed?
The material will be blown into the cavity through holes drilled in the mortar joints, between the bricks in your property.

How many holes are there?
The material has to be installed following a strict drilling pattern and the number of holes will vary depending on property type.

What size are the drill holes?
For fibre material the holes are 26mm in diameter.
For bead material the holes are 22mm in diameter.

What about filling the holes?
All the drill holes will be filled with an appropriate coloured mortar, matching the original colour and texture as closely as possible.  On some properties it may take several weeks for the fresh mortar to blend in. For pebbledash properties we will apply pebbles to the fresh mortar to match the existing finish.

My house has painted render?
Our technicians only carry white and magnolia external paint on their vehicles and will apply a coat over the filled injection holes. If your property is painted another colour we will do the same if you supply the paint on the day of installation.

Will you need to come into the house?
We are required to carry out several installation checks on your property both before and after installation. These checks involve assessing all gas and wood/solid fuel appliances, so it is essential we gain access inside the property. It would also be beneficial if you have the operator manuals for these appliances available for our technicians to refer to.

Access may also be required to your garage or conservatory but this will be identified at survey stage.

Is there anything else I need to do before the installation?
The drilling process unavoidably causes some dust and noise, so we advise you to close your windows and inform your neighbours of the installation.

Areas surrounding your property are required to be clear, ensuring adequate access for ladders, hoses etc. We would recommend hanging baskets, planters and garden ornaments are moved away from the wall area.

Some vibration is caused by drilling, so any valuables or ornaments should be removed from walls, shelves or window sills from inside your property.

We recommend that all vehicles are removed from both yours and your neighbours drives.  This is for both access purposes for our technicians and also to prevent dust settling on the vehicles and  possible chipping to paintwork.

My house is semi-detatched, can it still be insulated?
Assuming your neighbours property is not already insulated, our technicians will insert a cavity barrier down the dividing line of the two properties. This prevents any material loss into the property next door.

You should notice a difference immediately after the installation as your property will retain more of its generated heat thus allowing you to run your heating for a shorter amount of time and at a lower temperature.

Will the work be guaranteed?
Upon completion of the work and receipt of payment, we then apply for a 25 year guarantee from CIGA. CIGA are the Cavity Wall Insulation Guarantee Agency. They will send the guarantee directly to you and it can take up to 8 weeks for you to receive it.

Vents and Ventilation:
We will ensure that all ventilation present before the installation is maintained throughout and after the installation.

Our technicians will check all underfloor vents, room vents and cavity vents and sleeve them if neccessary. This is done by inserting orange plastic brushes into the aperture of the vent thus preventing the vent aperture from being filled with material. These brushes stay in place after the insulation has been installed.

Combustion vents for fires and boilers are checked for sleeves at installation stage.  If these are inadequate they will be replaced.

If any of the following need additional air supply:-

  • wood burner
  • open fire with back boiler
  • open fire of properties built after 2008
  • combustion boiler/gas fire

ventilation will provided by installing a core vent through an external wall.

Full ventilation details will be discussed at survey stage
.
It would also be beneficial if you have the operator manuals for these appliances available for our technicians to refer to.

Loft Insulation

How is the insulation laid?
The insulation will be laid in two layers. The first between the joists and the second layer across the joists. The loft hatch will also be insulated as will any tanks and pipes that have insufficient or no lagging. We must stress that once we have finished, the joists will not be visible and recommend that you do not access the loft space without the use of crawling boards.

Do I need to provide anything?
No, our technicians are fully equipped with ladders, lights, dust sheets etc.

Ventilation?
We will ensure that there is sufficient ventilation through the eaves by laying the material a suitable distance from the eaves, allowing adequate airflow
.
Any down lighters or spotlights will be left uncovered.

Normal household wires will be covered by the material as it is perfectly safe to do so.

Boarded areas and stored items?
Boarded areas and all items are required to be removed from the loft prior to installation. As such we request that the loft is clear.

If you cannot or do not want to remove the boards from the loft space, it is standard industry best practice to lay the insulation over the boards.

Due to insurance restrictions, our technicians are not allowed to remove items or move items around your loft space.
2 to 3 light boxes are acceptable.

How long does it take?
The average loft should take approximately 1 hour to complete.  This may vary depending on size of the loft and access to the loft

Does it cause a mess?
All the material is bagged and unwrapped in the loft space therefore making a minimum amount of mess.
All packaging from the material will be removed from your loft and property.

Payment

We ask that you (the client) make payment for the work on the day of the installation, upon satisfactory completion of the work unless otherwise stated.  Payment can be made by debit/credit card over the phone, by cheque or by cash.  Our technicians will be happy to issue you with a reciept to confirm acceptance of the payment. If paying with cash can you please ensure that you have the right amount ready as our technicians will be unable to supply you with any change.

Health and Safety

We respectfully ask that any children and pets are kept away from the installation whilst our technicians are carrying out the cavity wall insulation. There may be a small risk of falling objects.

Most loft hatches are placed either at the top of the staircase or on the landing, quite close to the ballustrades of the stairs during the installation of the loft material. This should be observed as a potential trip hazard.

The loft spaces are accessed using step ladders from these ladders for both their safety and that of our technicians.
Once more, we respectfully ask that any children and pets are kept away from the installation whilst our technicians are carrying out the loft insulation.

If you wish to view a copy of the full risk assessment and/or method statement for the installation of cavity wall or loft insulation, this can be obtained from our technicians on the day of installation or by calling our Customer Care Department on 01793 758191 prior to the commencement of works.
